How can I better understand the metrics in the Google Analytics GA4 dashboard?
- Charts display metrics as quantitative values that measure user activity and performance. Metrics provide numerical insights—such as total users, sessions, events, or conversions—and indicate how much activity occurred for each category shown in the chart.
- In table charts, metrics appear as columns alongside the selected dimension. For example, when a table chart presents Interests and Total Users, the Total Users metric shows the number of users associated with each interest category. This clear numerical representation supports meaningful comparison and helps evaluate performance across different segments.
- Once a chart is displayed with the relevant dimensions and metrics, the dashboard may also include other visualization types such as time series charts, bar charts, pie charts, and additional formats available in Data Studio. Each visualization presents GA4 data in a different way, enabling better analysis of trends, patterns, and overall performance.
The above image illustrates a chart from a Google Analytics GA4 Dashboard. In this chart, Page Referrer is used as the dimension, organizing the data by the source from which users navigated. The values shown—Active Users, Sessions, Views, and Event Count—represent the metrics, providing quantitative insights into user engagement and activity for each referrer.
